Mel Says Farewell To FMHC After Five Wonderful Years…

After five meaningful years, I have made the very difficult decision to step down from my role as Executive Director of Free Mom Hugs Canada (FMHC).

While it is not easy to step away just as FMHC potentially begins its next chapter, I am deeply honoured to have led the team on its journey from Free Mom Hugs Southern Ontario, a small grassroots community group, to Free Mom Hugs Canada—a newly branded, federally incorporated, not-for-profit registered charity!

It has been an incredible privilege to have volunteered with this organization. Over these past years, I have gained many skills and knowledge that pushed me far beyond my level of comfort, allowing me to grow both as a leader and as a person. I want to recognize and express my gratitude to the many Moms and Dads (too many to mention) who came before me, those I worked alongside, and those who will carry the mission forward. Each has played—and will continue to play—an essential role in making FMHC the success it is, and in ensuring it remains such a vital and much-needed presence in our community.

I am especially grateful for the friendships and partnerships I’ve built along the way. The FMHC Community group and our valued community partners, who share in this commitment, made it all possible. Together, we’ve fostered support, visibility, and affirmation for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Through this journey, I’ve learned that even in a world that can sometimes feel unkind, there is so much compassion and generosity to be found.

Although I’ve stepped down from my leadership role, I remain deeply connected to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and will continue to support, advocate, and raise awareness wherever I can.

Thanks again to all of you for being part of this journey with me!

Hugs,

Mel Orlando 🏳️‍🌈 🤗❤️
